The first look at Sony’s Until Dawn movie has arrived, providing a glimpse at the video game adaptation. This is not a trailer, though, but instead the key creatives appear in the video to discuss their ambitions for the project, with footage from the film cut in between the quotes.
One of the first things that is apparent is that the Until Dawn movie does not re-tell the story of the game, but instead tells a new, original story within the universe. Peter Stormare’s character, Dr. Hill, from the game appears in the movie as the connective tissue, however. The original game featured Hollywood actors like Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere, but they will apparently not show up in the film.
The Until Dawn movie cast includes Odessa A’zion, Michael Cimino, Maia Mitchell, Ella Rubin, Belmont Cameli, Ji-young Yoo, and Willem van der Vegt, in addition to Stormare.
Gary Dauberman, the writer and producer of the movie, said he thought a lot about how to continue the story of the game without “giving the audience the same experience they got playing the game.” Director David F. Sandberg said the movie has the same tone and vibe, but it expands on the Until Dawn universe.
The Until Dawn game is a choose-your-own-adventure kind of experience where that can lead players down different paths based on their choices. The movie, Sandberg said, has a mechanic where “things start over and they get to try again.” He added: “Every time they come back to life, it’s like they’re in a new horror genre. To survive, they have to make it until dawn.”
The first official trailer for Until Dawn is “coming soon.” The movie hits theaters on April 25.
2025 is filled with video game movies, with A Minecraft Movie (April 4), Until Dawn (April 25), Mortal Kombat 2 (October 24), and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (December 5) coming this year. On the TV side, HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 debuts in April, with Twisted Metal Season 2 also expected for 2025.
