In case you’ve never watched it, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is renowned for raising the benchmark for horror movies at the time. Set in the rural Texas countryside, the movie follows five teens who run afoul of the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface and his violent family, and at the time, the movie was praised for its realistic gore. While some of the effects might seem dated by today’s standards, the cannibalistic themes, shocking deaths, and a perfect storm of controversy made it an unforgettable experience at the time.
If the price tag on this 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition is a little too rich for your blood, you can get the film on its own at the more affordable price of $32 for the 4K Blu-ray (was $45). This comes with unnerving slipcase art and a cover based on the controversial poster used to promote it. Almost all of the special features listed for the 50th Anniversary Collector’s edition are included, barring the two new documentaries.
There’s also The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 40th Anniversary Black Maria Edition. This was originally released to promote the film’s 40th anniversary, and was out of print for a while but is back in stock and available at Amazon. This is a standard Blu-ray version of the original film with some cool extras inside packaging based on the famous Black Maria semi-truck from the film. It’s on sale for $61.14 (was $100) at Amazon.
In the last 50 years, there have been numerous sequels, spin-offs, and remakes of the movie, several of which are in stock and available at Amazon, including the Blu-ray edition of the 2003 remake that’s on sale for $10.51 (was $15). You can also pick up its 2006 prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning for $15 (was $20). These were followed-up with yet another remake in 2013, simply titled Texas Chainsaw, that you can pick up for $11 (was $15). And most recently, there’s the reboot prequel Leatherface that explores the origins of a new incarnation of the iconic slasher villain.
