Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Star Wars and Star Trek writer-director JJ Abrams, and superhero movie writer Zak Penn are teaming up for a new project.
Johnson shared a photo on Instagram of a dinner meeting the three had recently where they talked about “our passion for movies and storytelling.” He teased the upcoming project, whatever it might be, saying, “Yup, this one is gonna be fun.” Johnson said the project has been “years in the making.”
It’s anyone’s guess what this project may be–whether it’s a film, TV show, or something else entirely–but Johnson said it was Penn’s idea. Penn is known for writing a number of comic book and superhero films, including X2: X-Men United, Elektra, X-Men: The Last Stand, The Incredible Hulk, and the original The Avengers. Penn also wrote the screenplays for Ready Player One and Free Guy. Penn also directed the documentary Atari: Game Over, which chronicled the uncovering of the infamous ET landfill.
As for Abrams, he’s known for his work on the TV series Lost and for directing the 2009 Star Trek reboot before going on to direct 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens and later The Rise of Skywalker. Outside of those gigantic franchises, Abrams directed Mission: Impossible III, Super 8, and a single episode of The Office. Johnson, meanwhile, is an incredibly busy actor and promoter, and has a number of projects in the works, including The Smashing Machine and Moana 2.
