A Shadow of the Colossus movie has been in the works for more than a decade already, and despite nothing materializing yet, the project’s director has issued a hopeful statement about it. In a recent interview, Andy Muschietti said Shadow of the Colossus is a “masterpiece” and that he’s played it several times. Now, after 10 years, the “possibility of making [the movie] is opening up,” he said.
Muschietti told La Baulera del Coso on Radio TU that he’s been impressed by the script he’s seen, but whether or not he’ll actually get to make the movie may come down to financing.
“Shadow of the Colossus is a cult game, but to make a good film, there is a studio that puts the numbers and says how much it is worth to give the director $200 million, $150 million, or $100 million,” he said (via Eurogamer). “There are different versions of the film, and obviously, I want them to give me $200 million, but this is another factor to take into account.”
The Shadow of the Colossus movie has been planned since 2009, and had Chronicle director Josh Trank lined up to direct at one stage. Muschietti came aboard in 2014. After he was announced as the new director, Muschietti’s career took him other places, however, as he made It and It Chapter Two and later The Flash. He’s also directing multiple episodes of It: Welcome To Derry, which debuts this year.
Nothing is ever certain in Hollywood, so it remains to be seen if Muschietti might get to make Shadow of the Colossus. The game is a fan-favorite but it doesn’t have the most mainstream appeal, which could prove to be a sticking point if Muschietti wants a studio to give him $200 million to make it.
Shadow of the Colossus was originally released in 2005 for PS2 from director Fumito Ueda. The game has players traversing the world to defeat colossal monsters. A new version of the game from Bluepoint Games was released in 2018 for PS4.
While the Shadow of the Colossus movie might not happen anytime soon, there are four new video game movies lined up for 2025, including A Minecraft Movie (April 4), Until Dawn (April 25), Mortal Kombat 2 (October 24), and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (December 5). In terms of TV shows, HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 premieres in April.
