Amazon is crawling with great horror movie deals for Halloween, including a box set featuring one of the scariest films of the early 2000s: The Ring. Released earlier this year, The Ring Collection compiles the original 2002 film, The Ring 2, and Rings on 4K Blu-ray. It’s on sale for $59.49 (was $90) at Amazon. If you don’t have a 4K media player, you’ll be happy to learn this set includes standard Blu-ray editions of each film, too. There’s also a new steelbook edition of the first film to consider as well as the original series of Ring novels by Koji Suzuki.
The Ring Collection (4K Blu-ray + Blu-ray)
$59.49 ($90)
The Ring’s six-disc box set includes 4K editions of The Ring and The Ring 2 remastered from the original camera negatives as well as a 4K master of the 2017 movie Rings. The Ring 2 has theatrical and unrated cuts, both of which are included. All three films have Dolby Vision and support HDR10. You’ll also get Blu-ray versions of each movie and a wide assortment of bonus features: audio commentaries, interviews with the cast and crew, various featurettes, and more.
The Ring Collection not only offers the most economical way to get all three movies in 4K Blu-ray, it’s actually the only way to get The Ring 2 and Rings in the US. Shout Factory released 4K editions of The Ring 2 and Rings in 2014 and 2017, respectively, but those are out of print. The original film, however, is available as a standalone release as of earlier this month.
The Ring Limited Edition Steelbook (4K + Blu-ray + Digital)
The Ring Limited Edition Steelbook launched on October 15 and is available for $29.74, down from $35, at Amazon. If you don’t care about steelbook cases, you can grab the standard edition for $24.34. Both editions include 4K and 1080p Blu-ray discs as well as a voucher for the digital version. That said, the steelbook, as you can see above, is superbly designed. The cover resembles the staticky picture quality of the VHS tape from the film and features Samara in front of the well. Interior art depicts Samara sitting in the middle of the plain room, and the slipcase captures the moment when the VHS tape cuts to black.
The Ring helped kickstart a new wave of horror movies back in the early 2000s. The first film, a 2002 remake of the 1998 Japanese film and directed by Gore Verbinski, set the ground rules for the franchise. It’s clearly from an older time, as the entire premise revolved around watching a haunted VHS tape full of nightmarish images, getting a creepy phone call prophesizing your death, and then meeting a gruesome end seven days later.
The Ring Book Series
The Ring series is based on a series of Japanese novels written by Koji Suzuki. There are six books in the series, multiple of which feature entirely different storylines and characters. Even the original novel in Suzuki’s series is quite different from the film adaptation. If you like the series and haven’t read the books, four of the novels and the short story collection have been translated to English. The fifth book in the series, S, was re-released this week after being out of print for years.
