As the latest installment in one of the best shooter franchises of all time, Doom: The Dark Ages seemed like a good candidate for multiplayer options. But as part of today’s Xbox Developer Direct, Bethesda and id Software have revealed that there will be no multiplayer in The Dark Ages. Regardless, it sounds like Doom fans are getting the best possible game in return for that tradeoff.

As reported by Eurogamer, Doom: The Dark Ages executive producer Marty Stratton confirmed that the new game is laser-focused on creating an “epic campaign.”

“We made that decision early so we could really just go all-in on the campaign,” said Stratton. “It’s our largest, most expansive, most epic campaign ever, and we’re just really happy with the decision.”

According to the game’s director Hugo Martin, the decision to focus on the solo campaign allowed the team to add some of The Dark Ages’ wildest swings, including the ability to fight in a Doom-style mech.

“That’s why we were able to put the dragon and the Atlan [mech] in,” noted Martin. “I mean, these are things we wanted to do in the game for, like, multiple games now, but couldn’t, because we had a multiplayer component–which we loved–but really, it was meant to just focus on the single player campaign and just level up that experience for players.”

Bethesda and id also shared the PC specs for Doom: The Dark Ages, and it’ll take a powerful machine to pull off this title in its ultimate form. Doom: The Dark Ages will arrive on May 15 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
