Just a year after the success of Capcom’s Resident Evil video game, a live-action film was already being discussed, with horror icon George A. Romero helming the project. However, Romero’s script was inevitably rejected by producer Bernd Eichinger and Capcom producer Yoshiki Okamoto. A new documentary, out today, shines a light on the early stages of Romero’s vision in the aptly titled George A. Romero’s Resident Evil.

The movie is an investigative documentary that dives deep into one of Hollywood’s most intriguing “what could have been” stories: What if George Romero directed a Resident Evil movie? Check out the trailer below.

“In 1998, Constantin Film set out to bring Resident Evil, the legendary horror video game, to the big screen. They enlisted George A. Romero, the visionary director who redefined the zombie genre, to adapt the project. But despite the perfect pairing of horror’s greatest minds, Romero’s vision for Resident Evil was never realized,” the official synopsis reads. “Now, for the first time, Brandon Salisbury’s documentary uncovers the hidden story behind the project that captivated fans and the horror industry alike.”

Even without the series having Romero’s name attached, it owes a lot to Romero’s style and iconic aesthetic. Capcom’s other zombie-focused series, Dead Rising, may owe even more to Romero’s work, with the first game so closely resembling Dawn of the Dead that it included a disclaimer about the similarities.

The Resident Evil series has grossed over $1.2 billion and is the highest-grossing horror film series, as well as the highest-grossing zombie film series.

The documentary is now available to buy and rent on Amazon and AppleTV. It will also be available on Fandango, YouTube, Xbox, DirecTV, Dish Network, and Spectrum.
