After months of rumors, the Nintendo Switch 2 was finally announced earlier this morning. Nintendo’s new console will be directly competing with the power of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. But according to one analyst, Nintendo has already avoided a costly mistake that hampered the launch of Sony and Microsoft’s last systems.

Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Robin Zhu told Bloomberg that Nintendo has a supply chain lined up for Switch 2’s launch that should keep the chip shortage of 2020 from repeating itself. Zhu also noted that Nintendo’s supply chain may allow the company to sell 20 million Switch 2 consoles in 2025. Earlier this month, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella predicted that Switch 2 will sell 4.3 million consoles in the US alone this year.

The intense interest in the Switch 2 reveal suggests that there is a significant demand for the new system, but it will have a long way to go before matching the original Switch’s lifetime sales of 146 million to date. Switch 2’s price point may also determine how quickly it’s adopted by players. For now, Nintendo hasn’t shared details about how much the console will cost.

So far, Nintendo has not confirmed any games for the Switch 2, although what appeared to be a new Mario Kart title was shown in the announcement trailer. But more games will presumably be revealed at the next Nintendo Direct on April 2. Players who want to try out the Switch 2 early will be able to play demos in a handful of cities around the world starting in April. Nintendo has also revealed that Switch 2’s backwards compatibility with Switch games will be limited. There isn’t a release date for Switch 2 yet, but some are predicting a June launch.
