Until Dawn, a video game inspired by horror movies, is becoming a horror movie, and now we’ve learned a key piece of information about it. The film, which releases this April, is not a direct adaptation of the video game’s story, but instead it aims to take the “essence” of what fans enjoyed about the game and tell an all-new story. That being said, Peter Stormare’s Dr. Hill character will appear in the film, serving as one of the “connective” threads that ties the game and film together.
At Sony’s CES briefing, Screen Gems president Ashley Bucks said director David F. Sandberg is a “big fan” of the game and aimed to pay homage to the game with the film.
Bucks said Sandberg “took the essence of what makes the game great and selected elements we think are the most important to the fans and paid homage to it in the right way.”
Bucks added: “We then built out Until Dawn’s universe using the core premise of a group of friends who encounter a variety of terrifying threats to tell a new story that is truly visceral and horrifying.”
Stormare is returning as Dr. Hill, and he appeared in a video message to say the Until Dawn movie will tell a “brand-new story” with “fresh characters and victims.” Like the game, the movie has many twists and turns, Stormare said, adding that the film will appeal to longtime fans and newcomers alike. Stormare said the movie is “Until Dawn like you’ve never seen it before.”
Until Dawn the movie stars Stormare, Odessa A’zion, Maia Mitchell, Michel Cimino, Ella Rubin, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, and Willem van der Vegt. The movie wrapped filming in October 2024 and hits theaters on April 25, 2025. Sony controls the Until Dawn rights, but Supermassive is owned by Nordisk Games.
Until Dawn the game featured the Hollywood actors Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, Brett Dalton, and Meaghan Martin, among others. Supermassive Games developed Until Dawn, which was originally released in 2015. A remake was released in 2024, and the game might hint at Until Dawn 2.
Also during Sony’s CES briefing, the company announced when The Last of Us Season 2 will come out and revealed that movie versions of Helldivers and Horizon Zero Dawn are in the works.
