Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2’s latest update officially added a new Operation and enemy type, but it appears another, unfinished feature, the Research Centre, also made its way into developer Saber Interactive’s grimdark shooter.
As spotted on Reddit, players have discovered a new Thousand Sons emblem in the game’s Heraldry Editor, which itself states it can be unlocked by completing challenges in the Research Centre. With the press of a button, players can then directly jump to the Research Centre UI screen.
What exactly this unannounced feature entails is still under wraps, but it appears that players will be able to unlock models for various Space Marine 2 factions–the Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Tyranids, and Thousand Sons–with a new form of currency. Unlocking the models appears to then grant other cosmetic rewards, like the currently unlockable Thousand Sons emblem. It’s also possible players will be able to inspect the models in greater detail, with them serving as a new form of collectable.
How players will earn this new currency to use in the Research Centre is still unknown, but Saber Interactive’s Space Marine 2 roadmap does point towards a “Battle Barge expansion” as part of the game’s third season in 2025 alongside another new Operation, a new PvP mode, Prestige ranks, and more. The Research Centre certainly sounds like it could be the Battle Barge expansion in question, but fans will have to wait for Saber to make the feature official to learn more.
In addition to adding new content, Space Marine 2’s update 5 also banned the use of mods in the game’s public matches in the name of server stability. For those wanting more Space Marine 2 action, an episode of Amazon’s video game anthology series Secret Level (out now) serves as a sequel to the game’s story.
In other Warhammer 40K news, Amazon and Warhammer IP owner Games Workshop have officially reached a final agreement regarding creative guidelines for Warhammer 40K TV shows and films following a year-long negotiation. The first project as part of the partnership will now go into full development, Games Workshop announced.
