Another video game series is shifting to the big screen, or at least will try to. Lionsgate has announced a deal with Red Barrels to make a movie version of the horror game series Outlast. Lionsgate has some experience with spooky stuff, as it’s the producer of the popular Saw franchise.
Producer Roy Lee, who has worked on popular horror films like It and Barbarian, is attached to the Outlast movie, with J.T. Petty writing the screenplay. Petty, who also worked on the game series, said, “Expanding the Outlast universe into film is an incredible opportunity to dive deeper into the characters and killers we love.” Bloody-Disgusting had the exclusive reveal of the Outlast movie.
The Outlast series debuted in 2013, with Outlast 2 landing in 2017 and The Outlast Trials debuting in 2023. The series focuses on a journalist who visits a psychiatric hospital, and, well, you can guess how it goes.
Lee said Outlast set “a new standard for immersion” in the horror genre, saying the movie’s lore provided a “perfect foundation” for making a movie about psychological and physical horror.
Red Barrels co-founder and creative director David Chateauneuf said, “Horror movies old and new have had an undeniable impact on our franchise over the years, and to now have the opportunity to work on an Outlast film with true horror legends is a dream, or should I say, nightmare, come true.”
There is no word yet on when the Outlast movie may arrive or who could star in it or direct. Today’s news was the announcement of a deal to make a movie, but there are no guarantees in Hollywood. Plenty of projects get announced and never go anywhere, for any number of potential reasons.
