Earlier this month, Tom Holland revealed that he and Zendaya have already read an early draft for Spider-Man 4, which excited both of them. While Holland hasn’t shared what aspect of the script “lit a fire” in him, he has reiterated his desire to share the MCU screen with Marvel’s younger Spider-Man, Miles Morales.
Before Holland touched upon his hope for a Peter Parker/Miles Morales team-up, he shared a story on Rich Roll’s YouTube show about the way Robert Downey Jr. advocated for him during his first MCU appearance as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War.
“When I got to set after I’d got the gig and… I was meeting Marissa [Tomei] for the first time, and I was now working with the Russos and Downey,” recalled Holland. “My scene had been cut down significantly from what I’d done in the audition to now a page and a half, or maybe even two pages. And we start shooting the scene, and Downey piped up and was like, ‘Where’s all the kids’ lines gone?’ The Russos sort of said, ‘Well look, you know this is already a 140 page script… We can’t spend too much time on this.'”
Holland went on to say that Downey insisted that the entire scene be shot as originally written, with an option for the Russos to cut it down in editing if they had to. Instead, the directors used the entire introductory scene as filmed, and Holland expressed his gratitude to Downey for that.
“I think that’s really cool, and I’d love to one day do that if I’d be lucky enough to somehow bring Miles Morales into my Spider-Man universe and into the MCU,” said Holland. “I’d love to to do for a young kid what Downey did for me. It’s a way of honoring the introduction of a new character and a certain level of respect.”
If Holland sticks around as Spider-Man long enough, he almost certainly will team up with a live-action Miles Morales at some point. For now, all we know about Spider-Man 4 is that Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton has signed on to helm the film, which doesn’t currently have a release date.
