Last November, Karate Kid star Ralph Macchio and martial arts icon Jackie Chan–who starred in the 2010 remake–announced a new entry in the Karate Kid saga. The film, officially called Karate Kid Legends, will be directed by Johnathan Entwistle, best known for his work on TV with I’m Not Okay With This and The End of the F***ing World, with a screenplay by Rob Lieber.
The film will be the sixth installment in the Karate Kid franchise after three with Macchio as Daniel Larusso, which were followed by The Next Karate Kid with Hillary Swank and a remake. The remake starred Jaden Smith as the Daniel analog, Dre, and Chan in the Mr. Miyagi role, Mr. Han.
The Karate Kid official Twitter account released the poster Friday morning along with an announcement that they will have a panel during New York Comic Con later in the evening. Up-and-comer Ben Wang (2024’s Mean Girls) will take on the titular role this time around. The film also stars Joshua Jackson and Ming-Na Wen.
Karate Kid Legends will reframe the franchise on the east coast of the US and follow a teenager from China who trains with a tough but wise mentor. The film was originally scheduled to be released this year, but is coming exclusively to theaters on May 30.
Before the movie comes out, Netflix’s Cobra Kai should be wrapping up and it’s noted that the hit series won’t directly be related to Karate Kid Legends.
